Oh My Gosh, I Can’t See!!! I Have Garter Stitch Vertigo!!!

PEOPLE I have been knitting this garter stitch collar for nearly two days now! I want to gnaw off my own arms due to the miles of garter stitch. Ok, not miles, but the seemingly endless 92 stitch garter rows are driving me to the brink. AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

I give props to every person who can do garter stitch sweaters and scarves, because I am losing my mind with the knit knit knit coupled with the lack of growth. Funny part is this process is exactly the same when working stockinette in the round but somehow that brings me more peace than the ribby soul sucking powers of garter stitch. I may have to cut the collar a little short due to the desire to keep my sanity design reasons. It is looking pretty big right now at 9″ and it might swallow my head if it gets to the required 14″ length. Besides, as I was trying it on I realized that I will have to move to the arctic to get the most wear out of this sweater because the 15% alpaca in the Valley Berkshire Bulky obviously packs a punch in the body heat absorption category.  I can feel the heat radiating from my neck, its kinda weird.

Phew, ok…. I am better now, back to the knitting.

**BTW, doesn’t that color look yummy with the blur added. Love it.

  1. Tee, hee! Garter stitch does have it’s redeeming qualitiesis… it’s easy to knit while watching tv or listening to something….

  2. I love garter stitch for reading, but I totally know what you mean about not getting anywhere! Good thing you have such a pretty color to look at while you are toiling away.

  3. Ditto! Garter stitch is great for multitasking (watching TV, reading, etc.) but it is admittedly a little mind-numbing otherwise. And I hadn’t thought about it before, but you’re exactly right: even though knitting in the round is exactly the same motion, somehow garter stitch is less satisfying.

It helps when you get to work with beautiful yarn, though, and you have a lovely color there. Can’t wait to see your sweater!

  4. It is crazy how long garter stitch takes to grow, it seems so easy at first but then you remember how long it takes. Gorgeous colour.

Thank you for your lovely comment on my finished Hourglass Sweater, I can certainly recommend the pattern without hesitation.

  5. Ha! I’m just starting a garter stitch hat and was debating the “Little Albert” jacket from Sallie’ Melville’s knit stitch. AFter several weeks of finishing work on 2 sweaters, I’m eager for the mindless knitting garter stitch provides. It probably helps that I’m using varigated yarn rather than the same color stitch after stitch.

    Hang in there.

  6. i just finished a garter stitch baby jacket and i felt numb afterwards. ‘gnawing off your arm’ is a perfect description. i can’t wait to see the final outcome. the color is indeed loverly. 😉
